Experts in urban freight transportation research exist at a variety of organizations such as cities, Metropolitan Planning Organizations and regional authorities, state Departments of Transportation, federal branches of government, universities and research institutions, industry, and consulting firms. The Transportation Research Board’s Urban Freight Transportation Committee draws from all relevant sources to identify those individuals who can best help the committee achieve its strategic goals and who are willing to assume volunteer duties and shared leadership roles.
The Urban Freight Transportation Committee is committed to maintaining diversity among its members and to proactively advancing the Transportation Research Board’s core membership guidelines. In establishing the committee’s composition and also undertaking the mandatory committee rotations and succession, the following candidate attributes and membership “categories” are considered in the member selection process:
- specific area of professional expertise
- anticipated committee role
- TRB experience and familiarity
- gender
- minority status
- geographic base (i.e., by U.S. regions and international regions)
- organization type
- Young members (for persons under 35 years of age)
- Emeritus members (for persons who have performed exceptional service for the committee over many years)
- Special justification (e.g., for persons who exceed 9 years of committee service)
A listing of the official committee members and their respective TRB activities can be found on the Urban Freight Transportation Committee’s current roster.
Becoming a friend of the Urban Freight Transportation Committee is as simple as going to www.mytrb.org, creating an account and clicking on our committee to become a friend. After you do this, you will then receive our direct emails alerting you of our latest Urban Freight Transportation Committee news.
The Urban Freight Transportation Committee is further supported by a large number of committee “friends.” Friends are individuals who also possess a professional interest in urban freight transportation research and who may support the committee’s various activities in some fashion. Persons interested in seeking committee membership status are urged to first enlist as a friend and to demonstrate their commitment to the committee’s purpose.
The contributions of committee members and friends are essential to the success of the committee and are gratefully acknowledged. Among the forms of recognition offered by the committee are: certificate of commendation, Membership Hall of Fame (HOF), and Emeritus Member status. Committee and non-committee members may be nominated at any time for meritorious accomplishments and special contributions that advance urban freight transportation by contacting the committee’s Recognition Coordinator.

Membership Hall of Fame
The lifeblood of the Transportation Research Board’s standing technical committees is their volunteer members. Upon selection and appointment to the committee which best reflects individual expertise and interests, members assume tasks such as reviewing technical papers submitted for the TRB Annual Meeting, developing critical research needs statements (which may lead to synthesis reports and National Cooperative Freight Research Program studies), authoring original and cutting edge research papers and journal articles, and communicating the accomplishments, activities, and priorities of the committee to key stakeholders and potential allies.
The Transportation Research Board’s Urban Freight Transportation Committee’s Membership HOF calls to attention the committee members who have rendered particularly distinguished service to the committee. Many of these individuals served as committee members for multiple terms, undertook committee tasks during personal time, and championed urban freight issues within their companies, institutions, agencies, and home communities.
Beginning with the 2022 TRB Annual Meeting, the Urban Freight Transportation Committee formalized the Membership HOF selection criteria to recognize a member’s long-term contributions to the Committee. The selection criteria are as follows:
- Current (or recently rotated) member, with at least 6 years on the committee
- Demonstrated exceptional commitment and service to the committee with their overall body of work, as evidenced by:
- long-term contributions,
- a previous award from the committee for service,
- A paper award, or
- Other noteworthy contributions.
- Up to 2 individuals selected per year
- Special exceptions at the discretion of the committee for specific individuals that merit inclusion (i.e., HOF criteria were not in place during time of service/rotation, etc.)
Individuals selected into the HOF in 2022 or later have their year of induction after their name in parentheses. Note that those individuals who were listed in the HOF prior to the formalized criteria of 2022 do not have a year after their name.
The names listed below read like a “Who’s Who” in urban freight transportation. As the Urban Freight Transportation Committee welcomes new members, it remains forever indebted to these outstanding committee members.
